This release note provides information on the latest posting of AMD's industry leading Software Suite, Catalyst™. This particular Software Suite updates both the AMD Display Driver (version 8.33), and the ATI Catalyst Control Center™ (version 7.1). This unified driver has been further enhanced to provide the highest level of power, performance, and reliability. The ATI Catalyst™ Software Suite is the ultimate in performance and stability.

Caution: The ATI Catalyst™ Software Suite and the ATI Catalyst Control Center™ can be downloaded independently of each other. However, for maximum stability and performance AMD recommends that both components be updated from the same ATI Catalyst™ Software Suite release


Caution: The ATI Catalyst Control Center™ requires that the Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1 or 2.0 be installed. Without .NET version 1.1 or 2.0 installed, the ATI Catalyst Control Center™ will not launch properly and the user will see an error message.

AMD Chipset Product Support

The ATI Catalyst™ Software Suite is designed to support the following AMD chipset products:

  • Radeon™ Xpress X1150 series
  • Radeon™ Xpress 200 series (for both Intel and AMD Processors)

Operating systems supported

The latest version of the ATI Catalyst™ Software Suite is designed to support the following Microsoft Windows platforms:

  • Windows XP Professional
  • Windows XP Home Edition
  • Windows XP Media Center Edition (graphics driver support only)

Note: The ATI Catalyst™ Software Suite 7.1 is not supported under the Windows Vista operating system. ATI Catalyst™ software drivers for the Windows Vista operating system can be found at: support.ati.com

New Features

This release of the ATI Catalyst™ Software Suite includes Crossfire™ enhancements that enable the Alternate Frame Rendering (AFR) Crossfire rendering mode by default so that users will see significant performance benefits across all AFR compatible applications immediately (including newly released applications, so users do not have to wait for a future ATI Catalyst™ release to add Crossfire™ support for newly released titles). Future ATI Catalyst™ releases will add further Crossfire™ performance gains once new applications have been profiled specifically for Crossfire™.

Issues Resolved in the ATI Catalyst™ Software Suite 7.1

The following section provides a summary of the issues that are resolved in the latest release of the ATI Catalyst™ Software Suite. These include:

  • Desperados 2: The game no longer fails to play and display an error in atioglxx.dll when AA is enabled. Further details can be found in topic number 737-25109
  • Rome: Total War: Display corruption is no longer noticed when playing the game on an AMD Dual Core or Intel Dual core system containing an ATI X1800 series product. Further details can be found in topic number 737-25103
  • Sniper Elite: Playing the game under Windows XP with a Radeon™ X1600 series installed no longer results in texture corruption being noticed. Further details can be found in topic number 737-22820
  • Splinter Cell Double Agent: Corruption is no longer noticed when playing the game with AA enabled. Further details can be found in topic number 737-25104
  • X-29:Launching an X-29 application on a system containing an ATI display adapter no longer results in an error message being displayed. Further details can be found in topic number 737-25169
  • During video playback, DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) is now available when CrossFire mode is enabled. Further details can be found in topic number 737-23447
  • Attempting to maximize an OpenGL application window no longer results in either the OpenGL window maximizing slowly or the system failing to respond. Further details can be found in topic number 737-23717
  • Clicking on the Restore Factory Defaults button found in the ATI Catalyst Control Center™->TV Properties no longer results in the TV position failing to be restored to the factory defaults. Further details can be found in topic number 737-24346
  • Setting the display panel attributes to Scale Image to Full Panel Size, followed by entering an S3 state no longer results in the desktop failing to resume to a full screen mode. Further details can be found in topic number 737-24348
  • ATI Catalyst Control Center™: Connecting an HDTV or DFP display device no longer results in some of the HDTV formats being listed twice in the ATI Catalyst Control Center™->Digital Panel Properties->HDTV Support. Further details can be found in topic number 737-24349
  • ATI Catalyst Control Center->Digital Panel Properties->HDTV Support: Adding custom formats to the 1080i and attempting to remove those custom formats no longer results in the formats failing to removed. Further details can be found in topic number 737-24350
  • Catalyst Control Center->Help: Clicking on the Monitor and Digital Panel Properties found in the Contents section of the Help no longer results in a message indicating that the page cannot be displayed. Further details can be found in topic number 737-24351
  • ATI Catalyst Control Center™: Slow response is no longer noticed after running the Full Screen 3D demo found in the Color aspect page of the ATI Catalyst Control Center™. Further details can be found in topic number 737-25098
  • The Force TV Detection is no longer available for activation on systems that do not have a TV connected to it. Further details can be found in topic number 737-25167

  • The error messages "This South Bridge Driver is no longer compatible with the hardware installed on this system" and "Please wait while detecting hardware" are now localized for the Japanese version of Windows XP. Further details can be found in topic number 737-25168

  • Battlefield 2: Attempting to launch the game under Windows XP with the in-game display setting at 1920x1440 or 2048x1536 and AA set to 6x may result in the game failing to launch. Further details can be found in topic number 737-22817

  • Connecting a CRT as the primary display device and CV as the secondary display device may result in the desktop area and refresh rate being reported incorrectly when applying the 1080i30 Optimized mode within the ATI Catalyst Control Center™.
