Windows 98 includes the latest Indeo CODECS. NOTE: This problem may also occur with other multimedia applications that have movie clips based on the INDEO codec. SYMPTOM: The video portion, of ENCARTA movie clips, is scrambled. The audio portion plays OK EXPLANATION: The AVI files (movie clips) used in ENCARTA are encoded in an INDEO 3.2 format. The INDEO CODEC supplied with WINDOWS 95 exhibits the symptom described here. The problem does not occur with an upgraded version of the INDEO CODEC. SOLUTION: This problem is resolved by installing the newest version of the INDEO CODEC. The required file is "iv5play.exe" and can be downloaded from the INTEL WEB site at the following URL; http://developer.intel.com/ial/indeo/video/driver.htm Once the file has been downloaded, click the START button select RUN and browse to the directory where you saved iv5play.exe. Select iv5play.exe and click OK. iv5play.exe will install the newest version of the INDEO 3.2 CODEC which resolves the problem described here. ------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: This problem may occur in Windows 95 or Windows 98 SYMPTOM: FATAL EXCEPTION ERROR occurs, launching older applications or games. EXPLANATION: In order to take the fullest advantage of ATI's graphics capability it is necessary to start a process to move many of our driver components to fully utilize the inherent advantages of the Windows 95/98 use of 32bit code. All future shipping versions of ATI Windows 95/98 Graphics drivers will continue in this direction. You may find a small number of older versions of applications written using the Windows 3.x, 16 bit model, which had hooks directly into the display driver that, will fail when accessing our 32bit driver components. This may also apply to older games or applications that invoke Multimedia playback technology in order to play movie clips. For example some older games may install and use old versions of Quicktime. Most of the application vendors have already released newer versions and/or offer some sort of upgrade to newer versions. (see partial list below) If you are unsure or suspect that your application falls into the same category, we recommend that you return to your previous working driver. For Windows 95 use the 4.35 version [build 2278]. For Windows 98 use the approriate ATI driver bundled on the Windows 98 CD. We strongly encourage users to check with the program's vendor to determine if a newer version exists and how they go about obtaining it.We also recommend that users move as quickly as possible to applications that truly support the Windows 95/98 32bit model In order to assist in the transition ATI will provide one more Maintenance Release that will also support these older categories of applications. We will also maintain a listing of affected applications and versions based upon your feedback, on our support site. Regrettably, as the industry moves forward and operating systems and technology advances there are times when older applications simply need to be upgraded as well. We apologize for any inconvenience. SOLUTION: Check with the SOFTWARE provider for an updated version or patch.
